IS THE U.S. A CHRISTIAN NATION? YOU DECIDE “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God’.” (Psalm 14:1) The “fool” is not only the atheist, but also the one who lives his/her life with no sense of responsibility for their actions.
They may say “I believe in God”, but dismiss God as not having relevance today. They’re in error, for more is required than simply acknowledging God’s existence.
“You believe that there is one God. You do well; even the demons believe – and tremble.” (James 2:19)
Who are these whom God calls “fools”? One prominent group is Progressives (Liberals) who control the White House, the Congress, the courts (including the law), education, entertainment, government employees’ unions, the mainstream media, and science (e.g. the man-made global warming scam).
Initially, “purification of politics was a main Progressive goal, with many Progressives trying to expose and undercut political machines and bosses. In particular, they attempted to exclude illiterates, blacks, and others from voting, and to reduce immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe through devices such as a literacy test.” (Wikipedia Encyclopedia)
Today Progressives (Liberals) are out to change our Constitution. They have been re-writing history books, in particular denying the Christian roots of our Constitution, and the Christian men who wrote it.
In a column appearing in the Alvin Sun-Advertiser on February 10, 2010, the author, a self-proclaimed Progressive (Liberal) wrote, “It’s like the claim floated by those who keep claiming, ad nauseum, that the United States was founded as, and still is, a Christian nation.”
Let’s look at the true historical facts: 52 of the 55 signers of the Declaration of Independence were deeply committed Christians.
Let’s look at the words of some of our founders:
Patrick Henry, of “Give me liberty or give me death” fame, also said, “But we shall not fight our battle alone. There is a just God that presides over the destiny of nations.”
George Washington (1st President) in his farewell speech, September 19, 1796: “It is impossible to govern the world without God and the Bible. Of all the dispositions and habits that lead to political prosperity, our religion and morality are the indispensable supporters.”
From his personal prayer book: “Oh eternal and everlasting God, direct my thoughts, words, and work.”
John Adams (2nd President): “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
Thomas Jefferson (3rd President): “The reason Christianity is the best friend of government is that Christianity is the only religion that changes the heart.”
John Jay, first Court Justice, wrote, “Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian Nation [his caps] to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.”
John Quincy Adams, 6th President, on July 4, 1821 said, “The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: It connected in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity.”
William Holmes McGuffey author of the McGuffey Reader, which was used for over 100 years in our public schools, until 1963, wrote: “The Christian religion is the religion of our country. From it are derived our notions on [the] character of God, the great moral Governor of the universe.
Harvard University, Progressive (Liberal) stronghold today, was chartered in 1636. In the handbook for new students: “Let every student be plainly instructed and earnestly pressed to consider well, that the main end of his life and studies is to know God and Jesus Christ, which is eternal life, John 17:3, and therefore to lay Jesus Christ as the only foundation of all sound knowledge and learning [emphasis mine].
Calvin Coolidge, 30th President (1923-1929): “The foundation of our society and our government rest so much on the teachings of the Bible that it would be difficult to support them if faith in these teachings would cease to be particularly universal in our country.” (He would be sad to see that Progressives (Liberals) have been, and are, attacking those universal teachings.)
We’ve never had a national church, but that didn’t stop a Progressive (Liberal) Supreme Court from finding “Separation of Church and State” in the Constitution. It’s not there!
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord! (Psalm 33:12)
